8 Indonesian Cities Research is action-based research carries to identify characteristic of Indonesian cities. Initiated in 2010, the research start with eight cities as research subjects, i.e. Medan, Jatinegara, Bandung, Surakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Balikapapan, and Manado.

The research used triangular prism model as an approach that perceive cities in social, economical, and physical aspects, and place cities within spatial layers of macro, mezo, and micro. Kampong, traditional market, and rivers are entry point used as representation element of, respectively, social, economical, and physical aspects. Historical timeline analysis is used as research method; while spatial mapping, photographic mapping, and stake holders discussion are conducted as follow up methods to comprehend research finding.

Increasing agglomeration in urban area, as two thirds of population in Indonesia will be living in urban areas by 2035; window demographic challenge that put productive age at the highest level between 2020 and 2030; with fact that Indonesia is built of diverse cultures are background towards research objective that is to draw basic understanding about roots of Indonesian cities. Also, that this research is dedicated for young adult age 10 to 15 years old to support preparation for the generation as
future development actors.

Collaborative actions with city stake holders; pilot projects to perform as laboratory as well as alternative for urban solutions; and book of eight Indonesian Cities for young adult are actions conducted based on research findings. These actions are aimed to link the young adult within comprehensive system of growing Indonesian cities that are dynamic and diverse.
